Our Story

Natural Care Clinic now boasts 5 ND, 3 of whom have a special interest in Autism.

The clinic is currently located in a medical building with a Pediatric Walk-in clinic, pharmacy, the Medical Cardiac Canadian Centre, Medpoint (a private medical clinic), Right at Home Canada (home health service), a rheumatologist and a dental office.

Natural Care Clinic was founded by Dr. Carissa Doherty, ND, and her sister Dr. Sonya Doherty, ND in Burlington in 2005. The Natural Care Clinic is an internationally recognized centre of care and education. The Natural Care Clinic team is committed to improving awareness about chronic disease and how Naturopathic Medicine can improve quality of life.

The most memorable speaking engagement on Lyme disease was Lyme out Loud Kids Canada in 2017. She shared the stage with International speakers including Dr. Richard Horowitz MD, Dr. Christian Perronne MD Past Minster of Health for France, and Dr. Garth Erlich PhD biofilm researcher.

Dr. Carissa Doherty ND accompanied her sister Dr. Sonya Doherty to China several times to speak on Autism prevention, Lyme disease, Toxicity and methylation. She wrote a position paper for the Director of Nutrition of China on autism prevention. On another trip to China in 2018, she was asked to train over 200 Pediatricians at Hubei Maternity and Child Health Care Hospital in Wuban Hubei China. She spoke on Environmental Medicine, Lyme Disease and Methylation medicine.

As of 2020, she has been a part of the Medical Consultancy Group for NFH where she lectures and provides feedback on new formulations. Dr. Carissa Doherty ND wrote 2 handbooks for NFH, one on viruses and one on Lyme Disease.

In 2023, Dr. Carissa Doherty with her sister and a colleague, founded Exceptional ND, an education teaching platform on naturopathic medicine for Naturopathic students and practising NDs.

In 2025, Dr. Carissa Doherty ND, became a Board of Director for the CAND, the Canadian Association of Naturopathic Doctors. She hopes to represents her profession well federally.

Dr. Sonya Doherty, ND

Dr. Sonya Doherty, ND is a naturopathic doctor, educator, author, and clinical leader dedicated to advancing the science and clinical application of naturopathic medicine, with a particular focus on neurodevelopmental conditions, gastrointestinal physiology, and complex chronic illness. Her work emphasizes rigorous physiology-based treatment approaches, root-cause investigation, and measurable clinical outcomes.

In 2015, Dr. Sonya Doherty ND was approached to provide naturopathic treatment to 60 of Ontario’s worst cases of developmental delay. These patients were needing multiple care providers to move around and many were confined due to violent tendencies. One child was about to be kicked out of school and handed a $250,000.00 check and told to not come back to any sort of education in the region. With naturopathic treatment, there was an 85% reduction in behavour. This treatment if scaled up to 1000 patients was estimated to save the province of Ontario $25,000,000.00. This was a joint grant with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. 

Dr. Sonya Doherty ND with her sister Dr. Carissa Doherty ND founded the Natural Care Clinic in Burlington in 2005. The Natural Care Clinic is an internationally recognized centre of care and education. The Natural Care Clinic team is committed to improving awareness about chronic disease and how Naturopathic Medicine can improve quality of life. 

Dr. Doherty ND, is the founder of Treat Autism, an initiative established to provide education, clinical guidance, and science-based resources for practitioners and families supporting children with autism. Through this work, she has contributed to advancing understanding of the relationship between gastrointestinal function, metabolism, and neurological health. Dr. Doherty ND, spoke to the Director of Nutrition of China at an Autism Conference she was invited to speak at and submitted a prevention paper to the Director. She also spoke to over 200 pediatricians in Wuhan in 2018 about the biomedical aspects of Autism. 

She is also the founder of Exceptional ND, a professional education platform created to elevate clinical standards and scientific rigor within the naturopathic profession. Through Exceptional ND, Dr. Doherty provides advanced clinical training, mentorship, and educational programs for naturopathic doctors, supporting the development of precise, physiology-based treatment models.

Dr. Doherty ND,  is the author of a book called Autism Recover: A Manual for Parents on naturopathic treatment approaches, which has been translated internationally into Lithuanian, Korean, Spanish, and Chinese, reflecting the global impact of her clinical work and educational leadership.

In addition to her clinical and educational roles, Dr. Doherty ND,  collaborates with practitioners and professional organizations to advance the field of naturopathic and integrative medicine. Her work continues to focus on improving patient outcomes through the integration of clinical experience, scientific principles, and advanced naturopathic therapeutics.

About Dr. Carissa Doherty, ND

Dr. Carissa Doherty, ND is a naturopathic doctor, educator, and clinical leader with over two decades of experience in the treatment of complex chronic illness, including Lyme disease, chronic infections, methylation dysfunction, and environmental medicine. She is recognized for her rigorous, physiology-based approach and her leadership in advancing clinical education for healthcare providers.

Dr. Carissa Doherty, ND completed her premedical studies at the University of Guelph obtaining a Specialized Honours degree in Bio-Medical Toxicology. During her undergraduate years, Carissa was fortunate enough to be one of the first people in Canada to work in product development with inulin, a complex carbohydrate, now used widely in the supplement industry as a pleasant tasting fibre.
