What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in the world. Originating in China more than 5000 years ago, acupuncture today is used all over the world to treat and prevent disease.

How does Acupuncture work?

According to the National Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, there are three mechanisms to explain the effect of acupuncture:

  • Conduction of electromagnetic signals which speed up the release of endorphins and promote activation of the immune system
  • Stimulation of opioid systems in the brain
  • Changes in brain chemistry through release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones that help the body heal itself
