Language develop relies on an intricate balance between the nervous system and the rest of the body. Believe it or not, your child’s digestive tract, liver and diet play an important role in supporting communication development in infants and children.
Children need the right balance of essential fatty acids in the brain to help promote language. They also need enough serotonin. For adults, serotonin helps to regulate mood, sleep and appetite. For children, it has the addition task of helping a child gain important language skills. It is important to note that 90% of serotonin is made in the digestive tract so children with digestive issues and/or children who have had many rounds of antibiotics may be at greater risk for issues with speech language development.
Vitamins and minerals such as iron, zinc, magnesium, B12, vitamin C and folic acid are crucial to help the rest of the body meet communication milestones. One of the most important language milestones is at 18 months. Toddler should be able to say about 10 words. If you child has not met this milestone, see your medical doctor or visit the Ontario Early Years Centres to get information about developmental assessement. It is always better to be cautious than to assume a child will catch up. Sometimes kids need digestive, immune, sleep and/or detoxification support to get back on track.
