First of all I freak out a little bit because my sweet baby girl is crying and looks so sad and in pain. She didn’t have a fever this morning, but she sure does now. She woke up with a cough, but was fine and happy all day long.

We were out to dinner with my mom and my husband and I hummed and hawed because she just wasn’t that sick at the time, finally we decided that if Baby A had strep then we had better get on top of it before some real sickness happened. So my husband took our 2 year old home to bed and I went to the walk-in, where my little girl with a little cough, got a lot sicker waiting in the waiting room. I was glad to have come.

The doctor said fever, ear infection and bronchitis and sent us home with advice to continue breast feeding. So now, I had a really sick baby and no drugs.

I called my sister, cause she’s a naturopath and I just needed a plan. No answer, so I just sat and developed a plan and decided to pretend she wasn’t my kid that was screaming in pain unless she was firmly attached my boob.

We did warming socks. These are weird but work. I put a pair of sock in cool water, wrung them out and put them on the baby and put on her sleeper. Warming socks engage the immune system and stimulate the body to get going and start the fighting the cold. Don’t worry, the socks warm up. You can put castor oil on the bottom of the feet or vicks and speed up the process, but the socks warm right away and dry very quickly, leaving the body with more energy to fight a cold. No idea how it works, it just does.

I gave her 2 different kinds of probiotic, human strains, and just a finger full that she sucked off my hand

I squirted a saline nasal spray up her nose and decided I would do that 5 times a day.

I gave her belladonna homeopathic for the fever,

I gave her Traumeel ear drops….which were like magic. I woke in the middle of the night to her crying and a bad fever. It took me a very long time to realize she only had a fever on one side of her face……her ear ache! So I dropped these Traumeel ear drops in to her ears and I kid you not, the fever/ear heat was gone in 10 seconds. I did that 5 times the next day. When I asked my sister Sonya, also a naturopath about this magical reaction, she said it was amazing for some kids and didn’t work at all for others. I was just happy my baby was in the camp that Traumeel worked for.

I put ear oil in her ears from St. Francis. Olive oil and garlic, oregano and mullein. My baby A basically smelled like a warm pizza. Just olive oil would do the trick too. It brought all the wax out and she didn’t mind.

I put the ear oil on Baby A’s chest and back and overtop put castor oil and vicks. You can’t be too heavy handed on the super bad smelling things when we are trying to fight bronchitis.

We nebulized her with glutathione for 1-5 minutes 3 to 5 times a day. We have a nebulizer at home which is like a humidifier that you can put medication in and attach a mask. I use sterile water or saline water and glutathione. Glutathione breaks up mucous and kills viral infections. Amazing for chest infections. It has a nasty smell and kids hate it. It breaks up the mucous and really helps for those deep awful wet cough. It worked for my dry awful cough too, but this is about the baby. If I didn’t have the nebulizer, I would have just sat in the bathroom with the shower on and steamed her so the mucous could break down more easily.

The glutathione did make her spit up mucous, but better out than in for my little girl.

We went through a variation of all these things every couple of hours during the night. My goodness the nights are awful. I felt good just doing something, even if it did nothing.

By the morning, her fever had broken and the cough wasn’t as bad. She was much much happier. We continued to put nasty stuff on her chest, in her ears, up her nose and just rested and napped for the next 2 days.

It felt good to be doing something. Some of the things we did really worked for Baby A, Hope this helps when you are in the middle of the night. None of the things I have mentioned are unsafe and can be used in smaller infants. Good luck!

I have been practicing in Burlington for 10 years. I have 2 little girls, a 2 1/2 year old and a 5 month old. I’m in love with my adrenal glands because they are the glands that let me be a super mom, and they are the organs I can steal from when I’m up late writing an article instead of sleeping. If I am getting sick or under too much stress, I put more time into my adrenal glands and they always give me the extra help I need.

The adrenal glands are effected when people “burn out”. Those who have experienced this phenomenon know how important these small organs are because of the multiple levels of health that are impacted. Most of us have felt various stages of adrenal fatigue, which is when the adrenal glands are not working at maximum efficiency. Symptoms include:

Feeling tired and wired

Difficulty sleeping

Anxiety

These symptoms can correlate to abnormally high cortisol levels which interferes with progesterone, testosterone and thyroid function.

Symptoms of low cortisol include:

Fatigue particularly in the morning and after lunch

Increases susceptibility to infection

Blood pressure issues

Low libido

Low blood sugar

Depression

Mental fog

The adrenal glands are seriously drained when we have children. They take time and key nutrients to repair. The adrenal glands are best supported when we go to sleep between 9-10pm. Their time to be repaired by sleep is 9pm-12am. So if you are still awake at 1am, you missed your sleep window to nourish the adrenal glands.

Key nutrients to repair the adrenals are:

Vitamin C as it is needed in a much higher concentration in the adrenal glands

B vitamins are necessary fuel for the adrenal glands.

Magnesium is my new favourite mineral

Zinc

Iron but only if directed through blood testing. Unnecessary iron supplementation is dangerous.

There are a family of herbs called adaptogens. These herbs help your body buffer the effects of stress and support adrenal balance. Some safe examples of these herbs are black currant, ginseng, rhodiola, Passion flower, skullcap and valerian. The first 3 herbs are more supportive for energy production and the last 3 herbs are better for anxiety. My favourite is a rhodiola and ginseng combination.

Please remember to nourish your adrenal glands and they will take care of you!

Gastrointestinal disorders, allergies, inflammatory diseases, and infertility are just some of the problems implicated in humans, pets, livestock, and lab animals that eat genetically modified soybeans and corn.

Monsanto’s strong arm tactics, the FDA’s fraudulent policies, and how the USDA ignores a growing health emergency are also laid bare.

Action Points Perinatal Care: Optimize fetal developement

Diet that is gluten free and dairy free because of the inflammatory nature of these foods. Wheat Belly by William Davis and The Devil is in the Milk by Keith Woodford explains why. Food that are inflammatory increase demand for the baby. When we eat foods that are organic and have less inflammation, we can optimize development in utero (while pregnant).

Methlycobalamin (Methyl-B12) 30mg a day. A good company is AOR. 2 a day of the ultra methlycobalamin. This recommendation provides a co-factor in the conversion of folic acid to the most active form folate. 40% of us are methyl deficient and this puts the fetus at risk for developmental delays.

Methly folate. 1000mcg-5000mcg. Good companies are Douglas with it’s Methyl folate L-5-MTHF or Metagenics with it’s FolaPro. This is a more active form of folic acid. Not everyone will be able to use folic acid and we know it is essential for fetal developemnt. When taking this before conception and during pregnancy, there is less risk for anemia and better use of folic acid which is essential for fetal developement.

Probiotics are good bacteria needed to support the immune system. Studies show that good bacteria strains in the human bowel can be predictive for future obesity, cardiovascular and immune system issues. Human strains of probiotics are Cytomatrix, Seroyal, Natren and Metagenics. 1-2 a day are recommended for immune system and digestion regulation.

Fish oil. Most Canadians are deficient in omega 3 essential fatty acids Maternal fish oil supplementation has been shown to increase infant IQ, increase developement, decrease immune system issues such as allergies, eczema and asthma. Recommended brands include Nutra Sea, Douglas, Nordic Naturals, Genestra, and Minami. DHA should be a minimum of 1200mg.

Biomedical treatment of autism spectrum disorder and AD/HD takes a functional approach to treatment. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) includes what is referred to as classical autism, regressive autism, Asperger’s syndrome and PDD-NOS. To simplify, I will refer to these developmental disorders as ASD or autism. I realize that these disorders present differently but as you read through the different sections, it is important to understand that the chemistry and physiology of developmental issues is very similar.

Functional medicine treats the individual by assessing underlying impairments in each person’s system. Biomedical treatment includes thorough assessment through medical history, family history, review of systems and laboratory testing.

Benefits of treatment include:

Enhancement in receptive, expressive and spontaneous language development

Increase in vocabulary, language complexity and appropriate use of language

Increased social awarenesss, interaction and appropriate play

Cognition, understanding and learning

Eye contact and responsiveness

Normalized behaviours and interaction including self-stimulating, self-injurious, tics and aggression

Understanding and feeling emotions, affection or increased tolerance to touch

Biomedical treatment addersses physical complaints such as:

Chronic diarrhea or constipation

Sleep disturbances

Eczema and rashes

Behaviour (self-stimulating , tics, aggression and self-injurious)

Frequent illness or immune dysregulation

Individualized treatment for autism and ADHD is not only based on the most recent research, it is based on ground breaking research that is changing the way developmental delay is perceived by the medical community. Mounting evidence, for example, is showing that ASD, like other developmental disorders, is biological in nature.

The long held belief that autism is a mental health issue is being challenged based on physical findings such as immune dysregulation, elevated heavy metal and/or toxic load, inflammation, enzyme dysfunction, dysbiosis or microbe imbalance in the gut, nutrient deficiencies and altered neurotransmitter biochemistry (chemicals that regulate brain function).

While biomedical treatment is not considered mainstream treatment for ASD and other developmental issues, thousands of children have benefited dramatically. I have seen tremendous success in the over 200 children that I have treated on the autism spectrum. Biomedical treatment does not help every child but it has the potential to help t he majority of children with ASD, ADHD, OCD, Tourrette Syndrome (TS), LDs and many other developmental issues.
